Before we meander too far, let’s hit the basics of what the summer solstice even is.
The summer solstice is the day when the tilt of the Earth's axis is most inclined towards the sun, resulting in the longest daylight hours and the shortest night of the year. It occurs around June 20th or 21st in the northern hemisphere and marks the official beginning of summer.
This celestial event holds great significance in various cultures worldwide, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness, the abundance of nature, and the power of the sun. It’s been celebrated for centuries with festivals, rituals, and gatherings that honor the warmth and life-giving energy of the sun.
The summer solstice, traditionally associated with the triumph of light, takes on a unique meaning for those who find solace, joy, and inspiration in the depths of murkiness and introspection. As the sun reaches its peak, alternative subcultures like goth and punk — often known for their love of all things dark —can still find countless true-to-self ways to thrive.
The change of seasons becomes a time to delve into mysterious realms, explore the depths of the self, and celebrate the beauty found in the unconventional. Expressing your distinct impressions and interpretations of summer through your fashion choices, music, and rituals can be magical!

Pastel goth is a subculture and style that first emerged around 2010. Since then, it's only continued to grow in popularity. Many of the original influences for pastel goth came from Tumblr and Japanese pop culture.
A distinct and massively inventive aesthetic, pastel goth incorporates and spins off elements of the goth and grunge fashion genres. To balance out — or perhaps highlight — the edgy darkness of goth and grunge, pastel goth boasts a sweet and endearing side that's often dubbed kawaii. (Which is why pastel goth is sometimes called "kawaii goth" or "spooky kawaii".)
It's always good to peek at the underpinnings, to see why pastel goths are pastel goths. What makes them tick? What's important to them?
The main themes of pastel goth include:
And many of these ideals shine through in how pastel goths present themselves to the world.
According to the style bible, Aesthetics Wiki, pastel goth uses heavy doses of visuals like:
And, of course, there's lots of black. But with loads of soft or feminine colors to contrast. Think petal pink, lilac, baby blue, minty green....
Pastel goth is somehow bold, coquettish, and demure all at the same time. That's damn impressive!
You can express your love for goth, witchy, punk, and alternative things in a number of ways. Just make sure you adapt your manifestation of pastel goth to reflect your quirky style.
First, start by adopting the signature, high-contrast color scheme: black and pastels. Any pastels are A-OK and you can feature more than one shade at a time.
Dressing the part is pretty easy. Here are some examples of pieces that fit the pastel goth aesthetic to a T:
More generally, you won’t go wrong if you pepper your wardrobe with things like:
Your wardrobe isn't the only tool you have for making a pastel goth statement. Your whole body is a blank canvas waiting for you to exhibit your style.
What about how you do your makeup, manicure your nails, or style your hair?
We've seen many pastel goths experiment with funky contact lenses — ones with graphics on them or in striking alt colors — to create a really powerful twist. For a more permanent option, tattoos, piercings, and other body modifications do a stellar job of showing your pastel gothiness.
Where you spend your time can reflect your style just as much as what you wear. You can extend your appreciation of pastel goth to your interior design selections. Luckily, pastel goth décor is not hard to find and doesn’t have to bust your budget.
So, go ahead and fill your home with some spooky-sweet blankets, bathmats, whatever!
Pastel goth is a unique and innovative way to express your affinity for kawaii and alternative cultures. With this edgy-meets-endearing aesthetic, you get to embrace individuality to the max and blend hard and soft style elements.

Alt makeup is an approach to using cosmetics and other decorative elements to create unique looks. There’s a world of different products you can use to develop your signature alt makeup look.
One of the beauties of alternative makeup is that it’s emphatically open to men, women, everyone. And you’ll absolutely see a whole spectrum of people indulging in some face paint.
In this post, we brush broad strokes about some popular alt makeup looks and how you might achieve them.
You can follow the trends or strike out on your own. Create a come-hither look or one that less-than-subtly says FU and back off. Your face, your choice. Have at it and have fun!

This secret’s out! Dusky, moody, saturated hues are the key to this alternative makeup look. We’re talking heavy-handed use of inky and intense colors like black, midnight blue, crimson, eggplant, forest. Thick eyeliner and a smokey eye are totally on-point with this makeup approach. Basically, your cosmetics are lending an unshakable air of mystery, rebellion, or drama. Or maybe it’s your inner satanic self scratching its way out.
With this alt makeup aesthetic, neutrals — meaning products that are similar to your natural skin and hair complexion — dominate. While you may think that the absence of contrasting color would result in a nondescript and boring look, this isn’t necessarily the case. Neutrals can be used to make certain features fade away so others become insanely prominent. They can also create an androgynous or doll-like appearance.
Perhaps the exact opposite of natural or neutral is this in-your-face alternative makeup look. This leverages big pops of color that really play up your features, mood, or some other aspect of your personality. You can rouge up for colorful cheeks or pucker up with some kiss-me-here-and-now bold lips. And, don’t be afraid to experiment with flashy shades of eyeliner and mascara as well as a rainbowesque eyeshadow palette!
You don’t have to go dark to achieve drama. Some sparkly/shiny/shimmery/metallic makeup will definitely serve up plenty of “Wow!” factor. Add in some luscious false eyelashes and glistening lip gloss — and you’re in business. (Seriously, everyone from drag queens to pro makeup artists will be turning to you for inspiration!)
No rules apply here! You have complete freedom to create your own cosmetic style. Pull from different concepts. Include unexpected embellishments — like sequins or makeup applied in non-traditional ways. So dig deep into your handy makeup bag and get creative!
Are you more punk or witchy or fairycore? No sweat. You can certainly go down the rabbit holes of alternative makeup subgenres. Like these:
You can find almost too many alt makeup Pinterest boards and alternative makeup tutorials on TikTok — should you need to mine some more inspiration.
Scouting out alt makeup brands is also a great way to seed your personal alt makeup lookbook and learn new makeup application techniques.

]]>May Day — aka Beltane — is a holiday celebrated in many parts of the world. It has a really interesting history and you can observe the day in countless ways.
In this post, you'll find all the essential details about Beltane and some inspiration for how to mark this wonderful occasion.
All around the globe people are getting ready to celebrate Beltane. But what is Beltane all about?
Beltane is the Celtic May Day and is rooted in pagan beliefs. It's a holiday of fertility and the abundance of life.
The word Beltane (or Bealtaine) is Gaelic and roughly translates to "the fires of Bel" (the Celtic sun god) or "bright fire." Beltane is also known as the Fire Festival (big surprise).
At any rate, fire is a core part of this. Fire symbolized purification, which was believed to help ensure fertility. People also observe Beltane to transition from spring to summer, another form of blossoming new life, love, and creativity.
For the ancient Celts, May Day marked the halfway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice.
In the northern hemisphere, Beltane always falls on the 1st of May and is traditionally celebrated from sunset-to-sunset April 30th to May 1st. (The southern hemisphere has opposite seasons so Beltane is observed from October 31st to November 1st, sunset to sunset.)
However, in modern times, there’s been an expansion of this celebration, with Beltane being celebrated over several days or even a week. This is great news for those of us who want to enjoy a longer period of festivities!
There are almost too many ways to get your May Eve festivities going and make sure you have a hell of a time. We just wanted to spark the flames of your imagination and stoke your enthusiasm with some starter ideas.
And, if you’re into that elongated celebration trend, you can really jam in loads of Beltane activities!
Here are some all-time favorite ways people observe this holiday.
So, which Beltane rituals speak to you?
If you’ve got a healthy appetite for holiday delights, cooking up a yummy Beltane recipe is a great place to start! (Anyone else notice how central food is to so many celebrations? We’re not complaining, though!)
Basically, traditional Celtic fare and foods/beverages that are considered aphrodisiacs are appropriate.
Showing your Beltane spirit in home and personal fashion is another fun option. You can even turn to your inner Beltane craft demon and create unique home accents and outfits. Go all out if you want to!
In a nutshell, the Beltane aesthetic leans heavily on nature, myth and mysticism, and Celtic cultures. Yeah, so horns, plaid, and glitter can go together!
Beltane Blessings for All
Beltane is an ancient May Day holiday that's observed around the world. Dedicated to fertility, abundance, and gratitude for those things, nature themes (like fire and flowers) and high-energy traditions (like feasting with friends) are go-to Beltane rituals.
Food, fun, and untold festivities — it's no surprise this is an enduring and popular holiday. Whichever way you choose to celebrate, Beltane is a perfect opportunity to reconnect with nature and remember how blessed we are.
Let's get ready to welcome in a new season of growth and bounty!
]]>Have you ever wondered why April 20th is a day for marijuana enthusiasts? It's a day to celebrate the cannabis plant, and it's also a day for potheads to gather together to show their support for the legalization of marijuana.
Here are the questions we'll answer about 4/20 and 420:
420 has become synonymous with marijuana smoking — ya probably already know this. But are you as up to speed on the origin story of 420?
So, How Long Has 4/20 Been a Holiday?
This April holiday may seem like it's been around for a while. But it's more of a modern-day affair with possible throwbacks to paganism or counter-culture connections.
It's not hard to see how "420" the slang word became 4/20 the date. It's also pretty obvious how, over time, the day became linked to marijuana use. And, from there, it began to be celebrated as an unofficial holiday for potheads starting in early 1990s.
The idea that the date of April 20th was chosen to coincide with pagan festivals and rituals that celebrate nature has been floated. Whether or not this is true — and since so many religious and cultural holidays have been co-opted from paganism, it stands a good chance of having some legs to stand on — it's a good fit. Both the 420 holiday and pagan traditions are full-on festive!
The pagan connection is plausible. But, many people believe that 4/20 is actually more closely linked with the Western counterculture movements of the 1960s and '70s. People who identify as marijuana enthusiasts have been using 4/20 as an opportunity to celebrate their culture and rebel against "The Man" for decades.
How To Celebrate 420
OK, so we've answered the questions "What is the significance of 420 to potheads?" and "Why is 4/20 the day to get high?".
Now you're probably jonesing for some inspiration on how to party your way through the day. We’ve got some suggestions that’ll have you seeing green and not feeling blue.
No matter how you decide to own the day, if you celebrate, be sure to do so safely, responsibly, and legally.
April 20 Is One Smokin' Holiday
4/20 is a day to celebrate cannabis culture, counterculture, and the natural world. Whether you're a stoner or simply curious, there are many ways to observe this occasion. Whatever you end up doing, we hope you have a happy 420!

Fashion can be a staple to any wardrobe, but it's also insanely versatile. From head-to-toe looks featuring vibrant hues splashed across a bold print to standout accessories like statement jewelry or gem-encrusted belts — there seems to be no shortage of fresh options for you! And, once you get your hands on some key pieces — you can arrange or alter them to be even more avant-garde.
But what is edgy? Well, it's pretty subjective really.
What's on the fringe or commonplace isn't dictated solely by what is trending or popular at the moment. It evolves and is very personal according to what you think is stylish.
For example, if someone else wears an outfit that you think appears unusual on them but they don't find it outlandish — then perhaps it might not be considered edgy after all! And, given the lens of time, the outfit may rank differently on your "edgy-o-meter" in a few years.
Gaining an understanding of what constitutes "style edginess" to you is a process of self-realization and growth. By identifying what makes you stand out, you can explore ways to present yourself and ultimately cultivate a more enriching lifestyle.
It's all about perception. And no two people's are alike.
When you're trying something new or "a bit out there," keep in mind that people might not see the same level of edge in your look as you do. So, what's cutting-edge to your senses may be kind of boring or unappealing to another. (So screw them! You do you.)
For example, you might be drawn to loud patterns because they buck the beige trend. But if that print is garish and clashes with other pieces in your outfit — others may see your look as messy and unrefined rather than edgy.
Style edginess can be interpreted in numerous ways. It can manifest itself through your choice of clothing — from luxurious yet ostentatious designs to modest and understated (but still definitely off-center) options. Or, perhaps, you prefer to show your stripes with edgy hairstyles, makeup, and body modifications.
Anyway, how about a couple of examples of notable examples of fashion warriors? Lady Gaga, Bjork, Rihanna, Billie Eilish, David Bowie, Prince come to mind.... These individuals certainly showcase their unique personalities in their style!
Whether you admit it or not, your style choices undoubtedly signal something about who you are. Are you revealing yourself in your attire? Are you confident enough to push the envelope?
We'll assume you are on board. So, how do you pull it off?
The key is to find a balance between being fashion-forward and achieving your look without making a huge fuss. And, experiment and have fun!
Try these techniques:
For those who relish risk-taking, edgy style can be exhilarating. It's an opportunity to give conventionality the finger and strike out on your own uncompromising and totally-you path.
You have plenty of time to explore your own sense of fashion and develop a personalized trend-defying look. Now get to it!

]]>Believe it or not — believe it — researchers once studied head shapes in hopes of finding a scientific explanation of personality and thought processes in the skull geometry. It’s super fascinating, so let’s explore the origins of phrenology!
In this post, we'll launch (head-on, of course) into a brief history of phrenology and how a phrenology reading is done.
What is phrenology you ask? Good question…using your noggin we can see.
Phrenology’s an interesting and controversial field of study dating back to the late 1800s. It’s focused on the idea that one's mental capabilities and personality traits can be predicted based on the size, shape, and contours of their skull. Yeah — all those knobs and depressions on your head have a phrenology meaning.
This science (We’ll call it that because that’s how folks in that era viewed it.) emerged from a combo of observation, speculation, and assumptions. It supposes that certain characteristics of the human brain can be determined by looking at the form of and bumps on the old cranium.
Phrenologists believed that each brain zone controlled a different aspect of behavior — like morality, memory, etc. And, they thought these areas could be identified by examining features of the head. It was a look-see and touchy-feely science.
Phrenology Reading 101
During its heyday, phrenology was widely practiced by medical pros. They’d used their analyses to make a diagnosis of mental illness. (Yikes!)
Before we discuss process, let’s talk about what’s needed to do phrenology. Phrenology involves only a couple of key tools:
Surely, you’ve always wanted to know how to do phrenology. At least since popping into this post….
Basically, OG phrenologists (doctors) would rub their hands over the patient’s scalp and analyze the dips or ridges they felt along the way. They’d also look for asymmetry in features — like ear placement or nose size — as a way to make deductions about internal organ functions and psychological makeup. Phrenologists would then consult their phrenology head map and eventually land on a diagnosis.
Want to try your hand (or head) at phrenology reading? It’s not that hard. As phrenology is the study of the head, you start there. Gently move your fingers and palms over the skull, noting the different contours. Along the way, refer to your phrenology bust that emblazoned with a phrenology chart to suss out meaning for what you’re touching.
What’s Up with Phrenology Today?
Make no bones about it — even though phrenology has been abandoned as a scientific endeavor, it’s left an imprint on modern medical research. For example, researchers have used digital facial analysis to see if certain features actually correlate to specific personality types or behavioral traits. And, interestingly, there are studies indicating a connection between head shape and advanced achievement in math.
Are You a Phrenology Phan or Phoe?
No matter your position on phrenology — you think it’s a now-harmless pseudo-science or a legit way to help figure people out — it has made an impression on our society. And it’s cool to know about these funky cultural trends from the past!

March heralds the arrival of spring (in the northern hemisphere) and deserves to be observed with much merriment. This year, Ostara, a Wiccan holiday of springtime, is shining brightly upon us — let's take a deeper look.
This season honors the awakening of life in all its forms: vegetation, animals, and elementals alike. It also signifies the end of winter and welcomes in warmer temperatures, making it an ideal time for planting seeds or pursuing your dreams.
With the spring equinox rapidly approaching, it's time to prep ourselves for the best Ostara ever! To mark this momentous occasion, we've assembled a bit of essential info for you. Whatever you end up doing to observe Ostara — and springtime in general — have fun!
Ostara is a popular springtime festival that's rooted in the Wiccan and Pagan traditions. (FYI — The Druids call this holiday Alban Eilir.) It coincides with the March equinox and marks the moment when the Sun reaches its zenith in relation to the equator.
The word Ostara comes from Eostre. Eostre is an Anglo-Saxon goddess who represents spring, renewal, fertility, abundance, and all good things like that.
Perhaps you see the relation to the word Easter? It's no coincidence!
Ostara is usually on March 20 or 21 each year as it's tied to the vernal equinox. However, this holiday (and the spring equinox) can fall as early as March 19 or, according to some sources, as late as March 23.
What better welcome to the Ostara season than getting to know the main diva herself, Eostre, a little better? Here are some interesting tidbits to get you acquainted:
There are historical mentions of Eostre, but most of the details you'll see these days are drawn from more contemporary interpretations of Wiccan and Pagan beliefs and customs. So, don't be surprised if you find a lot of variation.
In our books, the onset of spring is always an auspicious occasion worth celebrating! It's a glorious time to take up new projects, share our accomplishments with loved ones, and venture forth into new endeavors.
Wiccan and pagan spirituality is nature-based and earth-centric. Because of this, you'll notice common themes in worship or celebration may include:
Keep this in mind if you're planning to jump on the Ostara party bus!
Now, assuming you're all aboard — what can you do to make the most of this momentous spring equinox event?
Here's our shortlist of invigorating ways to celebrate Ostara like you really mean it. They're sure to bring joy into your life, or at least your day.
Have the Best Ostara Ever!
Ostara is a special springtime holiday that hails from Wiccan and Pagan traditions. It marks the moment when we start leaving winter behind for warmer days and the hope, promise, and joy of all things new.
The goddess Eostre is a main figure of Ostara. You can honor her and the occasion itself through a variety of symbols and activities. Celebrating Ostara is a wonderful way to welcome the new season.

Grunge aesthetics — originating in the late 80s/early 90s and popularized by bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam — continue to be hot for clothing, accessories, hair, and more. The style is characterized by brooding colors, edgier looks, and a thrift-store chicness.
Sound enticing to you? Hell yeah! So, in this post, we knock out some ways you can take grunge fashion concepts and rock them your way.
Never feel stuck with your grunge style again! Give these ideas a whirl to create grunge outfits, grunge hair, etc. that really scream YOU.
Choose a base color — like black, white, brown, or gray — for your outfits.
A great way to incorporate neutral tones in your style to create a personalized grunge aesthetic is by pairing an item that's in a dark neutral with another piece that's in a light neutral. Alternatively, mix and match your understated neutral with something that pops — like an eye-catching distressed denim jacket or a print tee.
And, don't feel limited in your palette. While a dark grunge aesthetic is an obvious go-to, you can create a grunge green aesthetic with botanical hues or a soft grunge aesthetic with stony shades.
These approaches create a subtle, yet stylish, foundation that can be dressed up or down, go from day to night, or be switched up to fit your in-the-moment mood.
Get creative with flannels and t-shirts.
Try wearing a plaid button-down with a bad@ss moto jacket or that top you got at the concert you went to last month. Or, pair a tee emblazoned with a cheeky quote with hot pants, fishnets, and strappy heels for a sassy AF look. If you're feeling like an extra grunge, combine a buffalo plaid shacket and ripped jeans.
Grunge fashion also loves plaid in forms that aren't flannel shirts. Plaid skirts, pants, swimsuits, and so on work, too.
And, remember, these pieces are perfect for layering. Sometimes more is more!
Leather is a must-have for any grunge wardrobe.
Don't hide your hides! Leather's an essential part of the grunge aesthetic, offering an edgy and rebellious look. Leather jackets, skirts, pants, accessories — you name it, they're great options for adding some raw to your grunge outfits.
Plus, you can wear these pieces in a variety of ways, so they're a slam-dunk for a range of settings and occasions. Experimenting with different combinations will help you create a unique look that reflects your own style.
And if genuine leather is not in your budget or lifestyle — opting for faux alternatives is totally legit!
Spice up your grunge outfit with beanies, bandanas, chokers, and more.
Understanding how to style grunge may be as simple as embellishing your look with some choice accessories.
Want grunge hair? Top off with a knit cap. Or, wrangle your shaggy do with a plaid headband.
Even your feet can get in on the game. For example, combat boots — like everlasting Doc Martins — won't fail you. And don’t forget socks make a statement, too!
Pretty much anything goes with accessories. You have carte blanche to leverage jewelry, shoes, hats — whatever — to design your unique version of a grunge aesthetic.
Build your own grunge look with different textures and garments.
Layering is a fast and easy technique for creating a customized and versatile grunge aesthetic. Don’t be afraid to put soft pieces with rougher ones, darks with lights, solids with prints, casual with structured — you get the point.
Yes, Grunge Aesthetic Be Mine!
Grunge style is all about expressing yourself and having fun with fashion. With the right combo of neutral tones, plaids and graphics, leather and denim, and accessories — you can create an original and authentic grunge aesthetic that's unique to you.
So, get creative and don't be afraid to experiment with different colors, textures, and patterns. With a little bit of effort and imagination, you'll figure out how to have a grunge style you love.

You may have noticed that cottagecore has been a pretty raging theme in recent times. But, what is it exactly? What defines cottagecore?
In this post, we’ll cover the basics of cottagecore — and maybe you’ll see just why it’s gained recognition and traction.
Alternative styles run wide and deep. One of them is cottagecore. You may see cottagecore referred to as farmcore or countrycore, too.
Cottagecore celebrates a simpler, more rustic way of living and emphasizes romanticized elements, harmonious vibes, and natural materials. It focuses on comfort, nostalgia, and a return to basics.
You'll see aspects of cottagecore infused into worlds of fashion and lifestyle. As such, cottagecore can be a great way to cozy up your home and wardrobe!
Maybe you can understand why people have latched onto cottagecore subculture. For many, it's sort of like a balm to the chaos and uncertainty we experience(d) during the pandemic, political strife, crazy economy, etc. And who couldn't use a dose of idyllic sunshine?!
“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” — Robert Brault
Central to the cottagecore mindset are:
Some progressive cottagecore devotees are also staunchly anti-capitalist and pro-queerness. Others favor tradition and embracing European heritage.
“In a simple and a peaceful cottage with a beautiful view, you will not be dreaming about the palaces or the heaven, because you already have a perfect thing!” — Mehmet Murat ildan
While this is far from an exhaustive list, it should give you the gist.
“Baking is therapy.” — Paul Hollywood<
Unsurprisingly, cottagecore leans heavily into found-in-nature hues. Think greens as in leaves, yellows and browns as in a landscape, and pastels and punches of muted vibrancy as in flowers and berries. A quick internet search for “cottagecore color palette” will provide a cornucopia of color combos to consider.
OK, so this all sounds like you. But you’re feeling like you don’t have quite enough cottagecore injected into your life yet. No sweat!
Here are some ideas for adding more cottagecore to your universe.
“Life sucks a lot less when you add mountain air, a campfire, and some peace and quiet.” — Brooke Hampton
Aim for more cottagecore outfits with quintessential cottagecore clothing. These items are often made of natural fibers or have homespun-esque textures. Many times they’re poofy-sleeved or have some flowy or billowy features. Bodices, corsets, lace, embroidery, ties, and other throw-back or undone details are common.
You can find everything from cottagecore dresses to cottagecore shoes in many shops. Thrift and vintage stores are a great starting place! DIYing your own cottagecore clothing and accessories is another legit option.
Feel free to mix in pieces from other style genres to create your own, unique cottagecore aesthetic outfits. For example, there are probably countless ways to cross-pollinate cottagecore with more “conventional” goth, punk, pastel goth, or witchy styles.
“I want to stand by the river in my finest dress. I want to sing, strong and hard, and stomp my feet with a hundred others so that the waters hum with our happiness. I want to dance for the renewal of the world.” — Robin Wall Kimmerer
You don’t have to limit your cottagecoreness to just your choice of shirt or earrings. Expand your expression of the aesthetic by incorporating the central motifs into your makeup, hair, and nails.
You might do this by using cosmetics that give you a dewy look, rocking a romantic do (tuck a flower in there somewhere?), or painting some forest critters onto your nails.
Even your home or workplace can get a cottagecore upgrade.
Hang some dried herbs or flowers up. Strew some straw baskets about. Candles, slipcovers, tapestries and wool rugs, shabby chic or antique furniture, old-timey portraits or paintings, doilies and table linens, wallpaper, wicker, vases and ceramic figurines…go wild!
You can be as eclectic as you want — it’s the colors, textures, patterns, and vibe of the elements that pull them together into a cohesive cottagecore environment.
"A palace cannot make you rich but a cottage in the woods can." — Mehmet Murat ildan
You Know You’re Hardcore Cottagecore When…
Cottagecore is all about being simpler and purer — in fashion, décor, and lifestyle. There are so many ways to incorporate cottagecore into your life. Whether you’re looking for cute and comfy outfits or want to add a bit of country charm to your living space, cottagecore gets the job done!
]]>Hair trends are funny. It’s like half the style elements remain the same while the other half change faster than you can whip your hair around.
At any rate, it could mean game over for your edgy look if you cling to your 2022 hairstyle. So, in this post, you’ll find a quick take on 2023 hair trends for goth and punk hairstyles.
If you want your hairstyle to be a cut above the rest, here’s some trends to watch and adopt.
Is this too obvious? The biggest, baddest rule is break the mold. You’re an original so don’t exact copy someone else’s hairstyle. Take inspiration? Yes. Get direction? Sure. Pick up a few tips and tricks? Why not. Just make it your own, in true alternative fashion.
Hair accessories are jewelry for the head. They’re a fast and fun way to add sparkle, mix things up from day to day, or just generally put your personal mark on a hairstyle. So go ahead — do an updo with clips, tame your hair with a headband, weave in some beads or tinsel.
Find the right style and anyone can pull off a short haircut. Plus, cropped hair makes it easier to show off other personal style elements — like the killer pentagram choker or moon phases earrings you love so much.
Mid-length and below-the-shoulders dos kick @ss and take names. With more hair, you arguably have more freedom and flexibility to go wild with your style and change things up a bit on the daily. Which is why longer styles are also sticking around in 2023.
Beyond the decision of whether to go short or stay with a longer style, the overall shape of your haircut — what makes your head look like a ball, bell, etc. in profile — is a defining trait. Mohawks (and their variations) will be in forever. In 2023, you can also expect to see a lot of asymmetrical cuts (e.g., longer in the front than back or left side longer than the right side).
The palettes are to dye for in 2023. We’re talking lots of vibrant colors applied in bold and striking ways. All-over color will be on-trend. So will strategic and artful use of multiple hues. As for shades, jewel tones (think borderline neon or highlighter-esque), inky and dramatic dark blues/purples/crimsons, and saturated pastels will be the rage. Rainbow (both bright AF and pastel) motifs as well as solid black dye jobs remain in style next year.
This could mean doing the messy bedhead thing, getting some chunky layers cut in, going curly or ultra-slicked-back, etc. What’s key here is being intentional with the feel and visual texture of your hair. That said, the unkempt look will keep its foothold in 2023. But, smooth hair is also a winner.
You’ll continue to see long, loose curls, buzzed sections, spikes — some things never go away. But you’ll likely see more use of styling products to create “lifted” looks. For example, gravity-defying bangs on the dudes. Sizzling finishing touches, like shaved-in patterns or designs are gaining traction.
Greasy locks? Unruly — like *really* unruly — mop top? Flatter-than-flat tresses? This is when you can rely on your trusty hats. Put on a beanie or balaclava ski mask and BOOM! Prob solved, mic dropped.
Head into 2023 with the Best Punk or Goth Hairstyle
Now that you know some of the hottest hair trends for 2023, you can make sure you start 2023 with a fresh and fashionable look. Whatever haircut you opt for — make it your own to really let your personality show. It’s the perfect complement to the rest of your carefully honed style!
]]>Mid-winter can get pretty damn blah. But, fortunately, there’s at least one reason to smile: Imbolc.
Celebrated since at least the 10th century, you can continue the tradition today. We’ll give you a fast intro to Imbolc and then seed your brain with some ideas for how to celebrate Imbolc.
“I’d sit with the men, the women of God, There by the lake of beer, We’d be drinking good health forever, And every drop would be a prayer.” — Saint Brigid’s Prayer
First things first, this festival has its fair share of alternate names. Among the more common are:
So don’t get thrown if you see one of Imbolc’s aliases. These different monikers stem from the different traditions — e.g., Christian, Celtic, Gaelic, Wiccan, pagan — from which the festival is observed. Regardless of what you call it, Imbolc has its roots in pre-Christian British Isles but is now celebrated all over the place by all kinds of people in all kinds of ways.
Imbolc is usually on February 1st in the northern hemisphere and August 1st in the southern hemisphere, which marks the halfway point between the winter solstice and the vernal equinox. The festival of Imbolc signifies the coming of spring and at this point of the year days start to noticeably lengthen and lighten.
“So now, as the Maiden form of the Goddess whispers to us of hope and new beginnings at the festival of Imbolc, it is on a cold February morning that you are invited to step onto the ‘Wheel of the Year’.” ― Mrs. Darley's Pagan Whispers by Carole Carlton
The Imbolc rituals you choose to celebrate the occasion are totally up to you. But, here are some time-honored ones from various faiths and belief systems. Personalize them and have fun with it — whatever makes you happy!
Some Imbolc traditions suggest making and adorning Brideogs (straw or corn dolls) and Brigid crosses. These tokens objects can be decoration or can be invoked in other parts of your festivities. The ye olde days, the dolls were paraded around and then “honored guests” at the holiday feast.
Specifically, venture to a waterway. Imbolc is big on the concepts of purification, healing, and fertility. So, going to a lake or stream and splashing some of the “holy water” on yourself is a fitting gesture. While in nature, be sure to acknowledge the sacred trees and other plants and collect and trash you see littering the area.
Bonfires are a really popular choice. (Aren’t they always, though?) If that’s a no-go, a fireplace fire is a cozy substitute. But you could also simply light some nice candles or spark up some fragrant incense.
If you already have an altar, you can add in some Imbolc elements: candles, incense, things from nature. Don’t have a home altar? This is a great time to set one up!
So, what holiday isn’t [largely] about food?! Feasts are a steadfast Imbolc custom. And probably a tasty one, too, given that roasty, buttery/creamy, and carby things tend to dominate Imbolc menus. One cool thing you can do is cook your food using the fire you’ve built.
Declutter the crap. Tidy the messes. Wash what’s dirty. The idea here is to cleanse and clear out your physical and mental spaces so that there’s room for wholesome energy to enter and dwell. Traditionally, this purge-and-purify fest is done prior to the eve of Imbolc.
You can find scores of poems, prayers, and other texts for Imbolc. These can be recited while lighting your candles or strolling through nature, solo or with your fellow celebrants. Alternatively, feel free to come up with your own powerful prose, wishes, or affirmations for Imbolc.
As hinted a couple of times above, Imbolc is usually celebrated communally. So, rally you’re your crew to socialize, feast, dance around that bonfire, etc.
Imbolc is a perfect time to take a beat to reflect and plan. You can do this in countless ways — like journaling, meditating, or goal-setting. The objective is to set your intentions and then create ways for you to manifest them.
Getting a fresh, new outfit is always an easy way to shift into celebration mode. Whether you’re a party-dress kind of person or a staunch t-shirt devotee, you can find plenty of options to amp your vibe. Hell, even just a new pair of underwear can put you in the right frame of mind!
“Brigit’s holiday was chiefly marked by the kindling of sacred fires, since she symbolized the fire of birth and healing, the fire of the forge, and the fire of poetic inspiration. Bonfires were lighted on the beacon tors, and chandlers celebrated their special holiday.” — The Witches’ Sabbats
Have a Happy Imbolc People!
Imbolc is an important seasonal festival in many cultures and religions. With its rich and diverse history, there are so many awesome ways to celebrate. So, embrace old traditions and make some new ones, too!
]]>You might not realize this, but tarot wasn’t always a thing relegated to the realm of fortune-telling. Tarot has a much more diverse and storied past. In this post, we reveal all.
A little intro to tarot for the uninitiated? Yes, please!
Most current standard tarot decks are based on Piedmontese or Venetian tarot. They have 78 cards and are split into two groups: 22 major arcana (or trump) cards and 56 minor arcana cards. The Rider-Waite tarot card deck is probably the most popular set used today.
Tarot cards are usually numbered and often have the name of the card printed on the face. The number is typically in Roman numerals. Sometimes cards just have the picture, though.
Similar to your regular old Hoyle or Bicycle deck, tarot playing cards have different suits. However, you can also find tarot decks that omit the suits and instead have different images of deities, symbols from different cultures, etc.
Whatever the imagery, each picture has its own interpretation and significance.
The mysterious world of tarot cards has long been shrouded in mythology and superstition, leading many to believe the cards can expose the future. In fact, that's what the different suits and artwork help to divulge.
The suits provide top-level meaning:
(The name used for each suit can vary a little but it still represents the same thing as we're showing here.) Meanwhile, the card's image offers a more specific message.
The true meaning of tarot cards can also be much more mundane. For example, they can actually be used to determine simple, everyday stuff — like what pizza toppings to get!
So whether you're looking for a little guidance on what direction your life's headed in or on what to get for dinner, a tarot reading might be worth a try.
Tarot has a long, interesting origins story. How it’s changed over time is just as spellbinding, too!
First came the playing card, then came the tarot card. The first recorded use of playing cards was in Europe in the late 1360s. We don’t know much about these cards beyond that they had suits and were used to play various games.
Eventually, the decks morphed to include additional cards now known as trumps. This happened around 1440 in Italy. Throughout the following years, the number of cards in the deck grew. The kinds of cards in the decks grew and changed as well — from Roman gods to birds to astrology symbols.
The earliest signs of tarot cards being used as fortune-telling tools date back to around 1750 in Italy. But it wasn’t until almost 1790 that the first deck of tarot cards that were expressly deigned for “occult purposes” was created. This is the 78-card deck with major and minor arcana that set the stage for the beloved 1909 Rider-Waite deck.
These tarots cards weren’t used in any games, like prior versions were. These new decks were intended for divination practices only.
Probably not a shocker, but it’s also around the late 1700s in France that occultists began using tarot cards for prophecies and predictions. And so, tarot card reading was born.
At some point, the popularity of tarot reading fell off for a while. But, it started making a comeback in the mid-1950s.
Several tarot playing card games slid into vogue again in many European countries. There are even leagues and tournaments now for these games!
As for tarot reading, that’s gaining renewed traction as well. Some attribute this to cultural shifts away from “traditional” religions. Others think tarot’s having a moment again because of, you know, world chaos. People are looking to make sense of the universe that was set skew by events like the 2008 financial crisis, pandemics, and global geopolitical conflicts and corruption.
And, let’s not forget that tarot can just be for fun. Lots of folks these days deal for amusement, not to [try to] blow away layers of uncertainty.
What’s also cool is that we aren’t just having a tarot revival. We’re taking tarot into tomorrow. This is evidenced in tarot’s peek-a-boo into pop culture and media. For instance:
Tarot History Timeline — Anything but Boring!
From the beginning, tarot’s had a colorful existence. Today, it’s definitely got a solid foothold in society. Whether you turn tarot cards for fun or fortune-telling is your business, though!

]]>Metal music is a big, diverse category. But, it’s had some definitive impact on fashion, hairstyles, and more.
In this post, we surf the mosh pit towards the stage — where we see a few of the style-maker bands/musicians and the looks they inspired.
Surely lots of metal bands contributed to fashion trends, but we think these three top the charts.
No rundown of iconic metal bands that set style on fire would be complete without these guys on it. Yes, their music slays. But this group is arguably just as famous for their instantly-recognizable makeup, very tight pants, and platform footwear (which resembles the Demonia shoes we sell on our site!).
Inspired by the biker subculture, this band’s known for wearing lots of leather. (It really underscored their “in your face” kind of attitude.) This distinctive fashion aesthetic most definitely has stuck around and proliferated. Seriously, moto jackets and leather pants will never die!
Couldn’t resist that Wheatus reference (Teenage Dirtbag) there…. Anyway, this group has left a different sort of mark on style. The distinctive motifs and colors used on its albums and band tees has spilled over into other realms. The skeletons, demons, zombies, and other otherworldly creatures they usually feature could be the OG source of inspiration for goth, punk, and metal aesthetics that leverage these folkloric and hellish elements.
So, what style quakes did these metal movers and shakers spark? We think you could draw a straight line between metal music and these fashion developments.
The long-hair-on-men thing may be rooted in Viking and Celtic symbolism and imagery or the Vietnam War protests of the 60s-70s. At any rate, it’s trickled down to other subcultures, like modern "e-boys" and skaters. Regardless, it’s a way of sticking it to the man and gives guys endless possibilities to create unique hair looks.
After bands like Kiss hit the scene, it wasn’t just the ladies who were dabbling in the colorful world of cosmetics. Men started wearing makeup — like eyeliner, face powder, and lipstick — and nail polish. Now it’s a given standard in goth, pastel goth, punk, and other alt style codes.
Some believe men in makeup has to do with creating an onstage persona and probably to accentuate features to make them look more "scary." But it could also just be these bad boys breaking the rules, challenging gender norms, or giving society the middle finger.
Metal style is often rough around the edges, and this trait is frequently carried over to clothing. Wearing items with tears, rough seams, and other “crumply” or undone features is one path. Making DIY alterations to garments — like adding patches, fraying sweater hems, putting rips in stockings or jean, etc. — is another option. This probably started as an anti-consumerism action, but — bonus — is also a great way to create one-of-a-kind pieces that scream “INDIVIDUALITY!”.
Style Inspiration: Heavy Metal Fashion & Music You Love
Iconic metalheads’ dress, hair, and makeup was innovative, provocative, and trendsetting. You can see nods to specific metal bands — like Kiss — in alt style today. Other mainstay characteristics of the goth and punk looks that stem from the world of hard rock can’t quite be pinned on any one group or musician.
Whatever the history, let’s hope that heavy metal fashion cues keep on rockin’!

]]>We’ve rounded the Sun yet again and are on the verge of winter once more. Instead of succumbing to the chill and darkness, let’s live it up!
The winter solstice — aka the hibernal solstice — is one of the two times during the year when the northern hemisphere is furthest from the Sun. This is why it’s also the shortest day of the year.
Because of how our calendars work and the angle of the planet, the winter solstice isn’t always on the same day. It’s usually on December 21 or 22 — this year, it falls on the 21st.
The winter solstice is often a time of reflection. We celebrate the ongoing cycle of life, the presence and passing of winter, and the eventual arrival of spring.
Wiccans and pagans have observed the winter solstice since who knows when — it goes back a long way, predating Christianity for sure. Yule is a Wiccan and pagan holiday associated with the winter solstice.
In the old days, Yule was its own separate thing. It was a November-/December-time festival that lasted for multiple days and coincided with the winter solstice. (Different sources give different descriptions, dates, and durations for Yule.) Today, many modern pagans and Wiccans observe Yule on the winter solstice.
According to Wiccan and pagan beliefs, the winter solstice/Yule isn’t just a time to rejoice in the return of the sun and the end of winter. It’s when the barriers between the worlds are the weakest, making it the perfect moment to connect with nature and celebrate the phases of life.
This is such an awesome and wonder-filled season — it’s worth honoring that greatness. And, there are countless ways to do that.

Plus, with so many fun designs — like our Pastel Baphomet Sweatshirt — they’re mood boosters as well. It may be dark and gloomy outside, but you don’t have to be (unless you want to be, of course).

Hey, let’s face it — your @ss can get quite frosty if it’s not in some pants. Yes, dresses and skirts rock our world, but even with tights underneath, they can be…drafty and nippy. The solution: Have tried-and-true sweats, joggers, leggings, and bell bottoms on hand.
Raise the temperature of your winter basics with stylish accessories. More than just unique or fun adornments, well-chosen items — ski masks, hats, gloves, scarves, socks, and so on — can help protect you from the elements.

We’re here to let you know why thrashing to your own drumbeat is unbeatable. If you already do that — consider this an extra bit of validation (not that you need it, you bad@ss!) If you’re still squirreling around trying to figure out what the authentic “you” is — consider this encouragement and a source of inspiration.
“I rebel; therefore I exist.” — Albert Camus
Rebels are, by definition, non-conformists. They see a mold and then crush it under their booted heel.
It’s all about individualism and what that means to each person. Individuality is having or exhibiting qualities that strongly distinguish you from others. You’re setting yourself apart from the crowd in ways that are meaningful to you.
As a rebel, you’re taking control of your situation and playing an active role. You’re asserting yourself, rising up against norms or the status quo. That takes ball, so own it!
“You don’t have to burn books, you don’t have to rebel against teachers to rebel; to rebel is to truly own your own self.” — Dhani Harrison
“Rebels and non-conformists are often the pioneers and designers of change.” — Indira Gandhi
You know doing your own thing is the best and only way to go through life. But why is that? What makes finding and walking down your personal path awesome?
It’s not just about telling the rest of the world to F off (though you can certainly accomplish that, too!).
This list is far from exhaustive but is a good jumping off point. You’ll catch the drift. And maybe you’ll have even more or personal reasons to go rogue.
So, you see, the long and the short of it: It’s totally worth the effort!

“If you hate your parents, the man, or the establishment, don’t show them up by getting wasted and wrapping your car around a tree. If you really want to rebel against your parents, out-learn them, outlive them, and know more than they do.” — Henry Rollins
“When I need to identify rebels, I look for men with principles” — Frank Herbert
“Every man who has shown the world the way to beauty, to true culture, has been a rebel, a ‘universal’ without patriotism, without home, who has found his people everywhere.” — Chaim Potok
“Every valuable human being must be a radical and a rebel, for what he must aim at is to make things better than they are.” — Niels Bohr

Dissident, Misfit, Oddball, Eccentric — It’s All Good!
What matters most is being honest with yourself and honoring yourself. As we laid out above, there are plenty of reasons why being a rebel — in its many glorious forms — can be a great thing. And there are countless opportunities to become your best-ever rebel.

]]>There are many types of goths out there in the wild. With a little background info, you’ll know what’s a mall goth vs trad goth. And, once you can distinguish one from the other, you’ll be able to see what makes each of them so special!
OK, really quickly, let’s outline the basic defining factors of mall goth and trad goth. So we’re all on the same page going forward.
These are pretty much the OG goths. The music, fashion, and attitude is the post-Punk-era subculture stuff the average person thinks of when they hear the word “goth.” (Learn more about goth fashion and the history of goth.)
A picture’s worth a whole bunch of words. So just check out these examples of goth style to see what we mean.

Mall goths came about in the 1980s through early 2000s. Originally, “mall goth” was a not-so-nice term used to describe “wannabe goths” — kids who bought their goth wardrobe from stores like Hot Topic and Spencer’s.
The sentiment behind this insult-laden name? It comes from hard-core goths — “true” goths — believing that mall goths were only interested in the aesthetics of the subculture and not the other dimensions of the movement.
Now, though, mall goths have claimed their style. While it’s still not considered a type of goth, mall goth’s a legit and thriving style in its own right. Take a look.

These two styles are tightly related, but that doesn’t mean they’re essentially carbon copies of each other.
Now that you know what these goth genres are. Let’s explore how they’re alike and where they diverge.
It’s pretty easy to see the visual resemblances. While there are plenty of variations in mall goth and trad goth style, both are often hallmarked by:
As for hangouts and pastimes, you can find both trad and mall goths hitting the clubs, going to concerts, and consuming a variety of media (e.g., watching TV and reading comics). Granted, the kinds of nightclubs and content aren’t the same….
Both goth styles have experienced periods of waxing and waning. They shrink in popularity one moment just to resurge — better than ever! — the next. This helps keep them fresh and relevant.
Despite all the parallels between the two, traditional goth and mall goth styles do go their own separate directions sometimes. Here are some ways they do just that.

Different Types of Goth for Different Kinds of People
Mall goths were inspired — at least in part — by trad goths. They latched on to the aesthetics of the original goth movement, adopting fashion options that were available at their local shopping centers. It used to be offensive to be labeled as a mall goth but now it’s evolved into being its own perfectly acceptable style.
Traditional goths insist that their “gothiness” runs truer and deeper— all the way back to its post-punk origins. Trad goths tend to be passionate about the whole movement or subculture, which goes way beyond just fashion. It incorporates a life philosophy and other cultural expressions, like music.
]]>Hocus pocus, fairy dust, fortune telling. There are so many different strains and names for the different faces of magic and mysticism. In this post, we’ll hit the high points and then offer up some ways you can bring more hex with less vex into your life.
Magic and mysticism are related but different. They often go hand in hand.
Magic is the power to influence or manipulate things through supernatural means. The seven practices classified as magic are divination, astrology, incantations, alchemy, sorcery, spirit mediation, and necromancy. When used for nefarious reasons, magic’s sometimes referred to as black or dark magic.
Still, though, magic done by a stage performer for entertainment purposes is a different beast than the magic done by practicing Wiccans. The witchcraft of the Wicca tradition is often called magick — with a “k” on the end. The origin and use of this spelling are debated but, hey, it makes sense that there’d be a movement to distinguish between the two “magics.”
Mysticism consists of religious or spiritual experiences that occur during an altered state of consciousness. These experiences are usually accompanied by or in conjunction with related ideologies, traditions, rituals, legends, or magic.
There are three kinds of mysticism (theistic, monistic, and panenhenic) that encompass all the different “brands” of mysticism — like Kabbala. In modern day, there’s a rise in what’s called “secular mysticism” that sort of divorces mysticism from its religious roots and takes advantage of mystic practices (e.g., meditation) for physical or psychological benefit.
Magic and mysticism hold such a special place in our culture that the motifs are etched into or emblazoned onto all kinds of everyday items. This rocks because it offers you so much freedom and a variety of ways to embrace the supernatural and spiritual.
And, if you’re in need of some inspiration, on how to do this — we can help! These goodies are sure to cast a spell on you….
A few key pieces like these will take your wardrobe to another astral plane. Creepy cute and versatile, these dresses celebrate magic and mysticism with iconic symbols (that also look great on clothing!)
No ensemble is complete without the right embellishments. They put the special spark of individualism and a dash of “from the other realm” into your outfit.
It’s not always about what you wear but the space you’re in. If you’re interested in interior design that could only be called Voodoo Chic, Sophisticated Sorcery, or Nouveau Cult — your tea leaves might tell you to fill your home with things like:
Otherworldly in Our Everyday
Magic (and magick) and mysticism have been around since at least ancient times and are sure to stick around for years to come. Maybe it’s their ties to what’s beyond our immediate and physical perceptions. Maybe it’s because they hold power and potential. Maybe it’s because they’re anchored in age-old lore and rites.
Whatever the reason, you can enjoy them and bring them into your daily life in so many ways. Try adding elements of the occult into what you wear or some divinity into your home décor.
]]>Probably since the beginning of time, people have been drawing inspiration from their surroundings and the things they encounter daily. These days, it’s totally fair game to turn to horror movies for style ideas (and fodder for nightmares — or is that just some of us?).
Grab a bucket of buttered popcorn and cozy up with a buddy who won’t sh*t their pants at the first spatter of guts or slime. Below are some of the all-time best horror movies (Watch them if you haven’t already!) and how they’ve left their beastly marks on fashion.
Art often reflects life, but it goes the other way around, too. Life — and fashion — can pick and choose elements from art as well.
With horror movies spanning generations and geographies — it’s no shocker that this film genre has left an imprint on culture and style.
Even top fashion designers have plucked elements from movies like The Shining, Rosemary’s Baby, and The Birds and injected them into their couture This is evident in everything from blood-red runways at fashion shows to outlandish and creepy apparel that would put a gleam of pride in the eyes of Tim Burton and Alfred Hitchcock.
Luckily, the injections of fun-but-sinister style is alive and well — like a well-fed zombie — in off-runway clothes. So you’ve got a fair chance of laying claim to some sick threads!
Anyway, here are some of the movies we think are essential and are definitely style-makers as well.
In this must-see movie, a recently-dead couple hires a mischievous spirit to drive out a bothersome family that’s living in their former house.
This American Gothic horror flick is based on the classic 1897 novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. It’s the age-old story of a naughty ancient vampire trying to coerce mortals into doing evil deeds.
If “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” — you better not piss of a tribe of four teenaged magic misses. Of course, that’s what happens in this witchy film and lots of spells and curses ensue.
This one’s about a high-school cheerleader turned possessed sexpot demon who goes on a killing spree of her male classmates. Hmmm, makes our 9th-12th-grade years seem pretty dull….
From the Claws to Clothes
Signs of horror flicks’ influence on fashion are plain to see if you know what to look for. We’ve offered up four celebrated scary movies that earned their foothold in this film genre and have left a lasting impression on fashion. Have fun (re)watching these classics and stocking up on the freakishly cute fashions they’ve influenced.
